of my madness for men
i don’t know what it was about amc’s Mad Men that lured me into unequivocal devotion. the first time i saw it on tv was halfway through season two. i don’t remember what episode it was. i didn’t know the names of the dark-haired men, all looking extremely dashing in skinny ties and sucking on cigarettes. (i later learned that one of them was deep-in-the-closet Sal Romano and the other was the so-beautiful-it-hurts-to-look-at-much-like-a-lunar-eclipse Don Draper.) in that minute or so that i didn’t change the channel, i guess something just hit me because before i knew it, i was spending way too much money at the itunes store, downloading every episode of the first season, and all the episodes i had missed from the second.

everything about the show, i absolutely adore. from the writing and acting to the wardrobe and sets and everything in between (like the horribly non-p.c. crazy shit that goes on), Mad Men can do no wrong. it premiered in july of 2007 and, only two short years later, it can boast of five golden globe nominations and three wins as well as an incredible more than thirty emmy nominations and eight wins. while the show has received immense critical acclaim, it still does not have a huge following. i can understand this. in a time where reality tv trash and countless of forensic/crime shows rule, it’s not surprising that people have a hard time getting used to symbolic dialogue, frequent silences, and women usually dressed in stiff dresses that most always include buttoned up collars and hemlines below the knee.
look at that little tramp, Joan, showing her clavicle!
right now, we MM fans currently find ourselves a little past the halfway mark of the third season. this sunday, amc will air the eighth installment of a (like the previous two) thirteen-episode season. the thirteen episodes will be played continually, unlike most series that will me stretched out from september to may, littered with re-runs in between. my brother and i have been watching every episode together, and, as hard as i try, i can’t really convince anyone else to jump on the 1960s advertising agency fan girl bandwagon. i wonder why every not.
new fan, old fan, or simply curious, check out Mad Men on AMC every sunday at 9:00 central time. you will not regret. or maybe you will.
