the monday five: music edition!

Monday, August 16th, 2010

here’s a short entry about some of the stuff i’ve been listening to a lot on repeat for the past few weeks/months. i’m not going to get much into detail about the artists because, as much as i love music, i don’t think i’m great at reviewing it and my vocabulary usually gets dumbed down to saying “awesome” over and over. i will, though, include what was the song i can remember first hearing by the artist. this is always a special moment for me. i’ll also include the song that kind of just sealed the deal with me and the artist, the song that made me realize i’d be a long time fan. five things i like to have on me at all times

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

1. ipod (preferably not out of charge and with headphones; it’s not uncommon that i forgot to charge it or leave headphones behind.)

2. smart phone aka p.a.d.d. (sometimes i find myself somewhere that’s really boring and i play minesweeper to pass the time.)

3. moleskine planner (split by week but each week has ruled page for journal keeping)

4. chapstick/lip balm/burt’s bees

5. hair tie

002: The Friday Five

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

1. I really love horror films. Whether they be incredibly graphic and disgusting or terrifyingly creepy to the point where I can’t forget about the poor victims for weeks on ends, I seem to enjoy subjecting myself to the scary shit that other people create. Lately, I’ve been on this major Eli Roth kick. I rewatched Cabin Fever, his debut motion picture. I saw this movie when I was in the eighth grade and it was seriously disturbing. Recently, I purchased both of his more recent films: Hostel and Hostel II. These movies are amazing. They’re disgusting, disturbing, hilarious, and filled with fantastic writing. Eli only ever directs films he writes, and his writing is something superb. Not only is Eli a fantastic director and writer, his acting chops are nothing to be dismissed. When an actor dropped out at the last minute from Cabin Fever, Eli moved over to the front of the camera. It was a small role, that of a slightly deranged stoner, but it somehow caught the attention of fellow director Quentin Tarantino. So much so, that Tarantino put Eli in his then-current project, Death Proof. In his last project, Inglorious Basterds, Tarantino also gave Eli a role: the Bear Jew. The Bear Jew role was one of the best in Basterds, not seen enough but fantastic anyway. So, yeah, Eli Roth, is my current fascination. But I’ve been thinking about giving up on him. The reason why brings me to my next point. (more…)

of phrases that should be outlawed

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

have you ever been chatting with a friend when, all of a sudden, they say one little phrase or word that is so annoying or out of context or superfluous, that you just tune out the rest of the conversation while you grind your teeth hard enough so that you don’t tell him/her to shut up? well, maybe i’m just really touchy, but this happens quite often. with the help of two friends, sophia and roxie, i’ve compiled a list of some of those phrases that just really grind our gears.

readers, feel free to leave a comment with a phrase that you absolutely hate. (more…)

of film influence on my mushy identity

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

at twenty-one years old, i will easily admit that i do not know who i am or who i want to be or, quite simply, what i am doing with my life. in fact, i am proud of this. i don’t pretend to have a clear goal to achieve in the next few years of my life or a finish line to get to in the near future. anyone who asks me, “so what are you going to school for?” or something along the lines of “so what do you want to do when you graduate?” i will, without hesitation, usually reply: “er i don’t really know. i’m just going to see what happens after graduation.” see? i don’t know and i’m kind of okay with that. i figure that, i will know someday. i will know who i am and what i want to do and where i’ll want to go in life. for now, though, i’m kinda just absorbing little fragments of people i meet into my own personality or certain mantras i read in books or, not so profound, fashion tips from characters in movies i watch. of my madness for men

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

i don’t know what it was about amc’s Mad Men that lured me into unequivocal devotion. the first time i saw it on tv was halfway through season two. i don’t remember what episode it was. i didn’t know the names of the dark-haired men, all looking extremely dashing in skinny ties and sucking on cigarettes. (i later learned that one of them was deep-in-the-closet Sal Romano and the other was the so-beautiful-it-hurts-to-look-at-much-like-a-lunar-eclipse Don Draper.) in that minute or so that i didn’t change the channel, i guess something just hit me because before i knew it, i was spending way too much money at the itunes store, downloading every episode of the first season, and all the episodes i had missed from the second.
