1. I really love horror films. Whether they be incredibly graphic and disgusting or terrifyingly creepy to the point where I can’t forget about the poor victims for weeks on ends, I seem to enjoy subjecting myself to the scary shit that other people create. Lately, I’ve been on this major Eli Roth kick. I rewatched Cabin Fever, his debut motion picture. I saw this movie when I was in the eighth grade and it was seriously disturbing. Recently, I purchased both of his more recent films: Hostel and Hostel II. These movies are amazing. They’re disgusting, disturbing, hilarious, and filled with fantastic writing. Eli only ever directs films he writes, and his writing is something superb. Not only is Eli a fantastic director and writer, his acting chops are nothing to be dismissed. When an actor dropped out at the last minute from Cabin Fever, Eli moved over to the front of the camera. It was a small role, that of a slightly deranged stoner, but it somehow caught the attention of fellow director Quentin Tarantino. So much so, that Tarantino put Eli in his then-current project, Death Proof. In his last project, Inglorious Basterds, Tarantino also gave Eli a role: the Bear Jew. The Bear Jew role was one of the best in Basterds, not seen enough but fantastic anyway. So, yeah, Eli Roth, is my current fascination. But I’ve been thinking about giving up on him. The reason why brings me to my next point.

2. This cinematic genius, Eli Roth, is currently dating a disgusting English socialite, notorious for poor behavior and drug abuse. Now, there are many reasons why I find her to be unworthy of his attention, but if I really went into all of it, I’d hate myself. I don’t want to waste effort writing about her, but I really think Eli could do much better.

3. I know this is a little late as the Academy Awards were almost a month ago, but I really want to go see Tom Ford’s directorial debut, A Single Man. As I live in a culture-less city, of course, the film never made it to theaters regardless of the fact that it was released in December of last year. Not only do I feel that Tom Ford is a talented individual and that is good enough reason to go see the film, it also stars one of my favorite actors Of All Time, Colin Firth. In the supporting cast there is also the fantastic Julianne Moore and the charming Matthew Goode. In short, it has all the makings of a movie that I seemed to be programmed to love. Unfortunately, however, it seemed I would simply have to wait for the dvd or something because I didn’t know how else to see it. Earlier today I was checking the movie list on Fandango because I really want to watch Clash of the Titans, only instead of looking at those showtimes, I see that our local dollar theater is currently showing A Single Man! Isn’t that great? I really want to go see it tonight so, yes, I will be doing that definitely today. I’m sure I’ll love it.

4. I’m a pretty poor blog keeper. Clearly. Since I was about twelve (ten years ago!), I’ve kept some form of online diary. As horrifying as the idea is, it’s true. There are bits of me scattered all over the web, most of which I couldn’t find if I tried. None of them, however, have I ever had to pay for up until this blog. I have been paying for it for about seven months now, and I need to use it! I’m going to try much harder after my winter hiatus. I just wish there was some program on my computer that I could have that would just pop up every day and not leave until I’d written something substantial. It’s not that I find myself at a loss for what to write. No, that’s not it at all. I’ve got words coming out of my ears. I just think I’m easily distracted and I really have to sit down and concentrate on doing a simple task like writing a fairly unsophisticated blog entry like this. But, yes, from now on, I shall try to keep regular posting.

5. This month has come with crazy awesome magazines. On PAPER, Beth Ditto is on the cover. Nylon has Zoe Saldana; Esquire has Tina Fey; Details has Sam Worthington. These are the four that have caught my attention. I know Shia LeBeuouf is on the cover of GQ but, eh, he’s not that great. Of those four first mentioned, I only have PAPER, thanks to a gift subscription. I need to go get the other three. I read the article on Zoe from Nylon, and it was really good. She seems like a really rad person. I could have dedicated a whole FF bullet on her, but I didn’t want to make all five them totally related to films. So, yeah, go out and buy a good magazine because that industry needs support!

have you ever been chatting with a friend when, all of a sudden, they say one little phrase or word that is so annoying or out of context or superfluous, that you just tune out the rest of the conversation while you grind your teeth hard enough so that you don’t tell him/her to shut up? well, maybe i’m just really touchy, but this happens quite often. with the help of two friends, sophia and roxie, i’ve compiled a list of some of those phrases that just really grind our gears.

readers, feel free to leave a comment with a phrase that you absolutely hate.

010. “It truly is”
004. “You don’t even want to know”
003. “Well, when you put it like that”
002. “Don’t worry about it”

at twenty-one years old, i will easily admit that i do not know who i am or who i want to be or, quite simply, what i am doing with my life. in fact, i am proud of this. i don’t pretend to have a clear goal to achieve in the next few years of my life or a finish line to get to in the near future. anyone who asks me, “so what are you going to school for?” or something along the lines of “so what do you want to do when you graduate?” i will, without hesitation, usually reply: “er i don’t really know. i’m just going to see what happens after graduation.” see? i don’t know and i’m kind of okay with that. i figure that, i will know someday. i will know who i am and what i want to do and where i’ll want to go in life. for now, though, i’m kinda just absorbing little fragments of people i meet into my own personality or certain mantras i read in books or, not so profound, fashion tips from characters in movies i watch.

this brings me to what this post is really about. almost two weeks ago, my friend, her younger sister, and myself went to go see drew barrymore’s directorial debut film, Whip It, which i had been looking forward to for some time. i went to the film with an open mind, well aware of the fact that drew is an average actor, at best, and, therefore, her directing capabilities might me less than impressive. like i said, i was looking forward to this movie mainly because of the cast. i do like drew barrymore and juliette lewis; i’ve finally come to terms with the fact that ellen page is a good actress; kristin wiig is absolutely amazing, and andrew wilson (eldest of the always charming wilson brothers) is totally hilarious. the premise of the movie is simple: small town girl goes to the big city and sees a roller derby game and wants to do it herself but has to hide it from her mom because she just wants her daughter to be a beauty queen. roller derby itself is an awesome sport. the chicks who do it are badass, and it’s fun to see girls kicking each others asses. another really cool bonus is that the film is set in texas, and lots of the scenes are in austin, a very cool city. bottom line is that i love movies about strong gals, and the movie’s tag line is: Be your own hero. hell yeah!

there were two things that i feel i should definitely start doing that i got from the movie. i say only two because i’m already badass and my own hero (LIES). the first is simple: EYELINER. i’m guessing in the makeup for the actresses in the movie, many sticks of eyeliner were harmed! it’s excessive. but totally awesome. so yeah, i’m going to start using eyeliner more often than i usually do (i.e. never). look at the picture below! isn’t their make up great? look at kristen wiig’s! her eyeliner is like across her temples. well, i don’t want to do my make up daily like that, but i feel that i already have kinda big eyes that are pretty okay looking, so eyeliner would definitely accentuate them.

the other thing i want to start using that i got from the movie is a certain kind of shoe. skates? noooo. combat boots. throughout the film (when not in her derby uniform), ellen page’s character bliss was usually rocking a skirt/tights/combat boot combo. it was pretty hot. i definitely think that that combat boots and tights, when paired with feminine skirts or dresses, would be a very cool look. tomorrow, i’m going to the goodwill store to see if i might be able to find some. i’m really excited.

the movie was really great. i definitely recommend anyone to see it. it’s not a chick flick, but it definitely sends a message of female empowerment. it’s not radically feminist, though. if you’re a girl and you see this movie, you will definitely feel that you can rock a pair of skates and still be a badass. just because i liked the movie so much, i’m going to include some more stills.

ellen, andrew, kristen

the hurl scouts

i don’t know what it was about amc’s Mad Men that lured me into unequivocal devotion. the first time i saw it on tv was halfway through season two. i don’t remember what episode it was. i didn’t know the names of the dark-haired men, all looking extremely dashing in skinny ties and sucking on cigarettes. (i later learned that one of them was deep-in-the-closet Sal Romano and the other was the so-beautiful-it-hurts-to-look-at-much-like-a-lunar-eclipse Don Draper.) in that minute or so that i didn’t change the channel, i guess something just hit me because before i knew it, i was spending way too much money at the itunes store, downloading every episode of the first season, and all the episodes i had missed from the second.

everything about the show, i absolutely adore. from the writing and acting to the wardrobe and sets and everything in between (like the horribly non-p.c. crazy shit that goes on), Mad Men can do no wrong. it premiered in july of 2007 and, only two short years later, it can boast of five golden globe nominations and three wins as well as an incredible more than thirty emmy nominations and eight wins. while the show has received immense critical acclaim, it still does not have a huge following. i can understand this. in a time where reality tv trash and countless of forensic/crime shows rule, it’s not surprising that people have a hard time getting used to symbolic dialogue, frequent silences, and women usually dressed in stiff dresses that most always include buttoned up collars and hemlines below the knee.

look at that little tramp, Joan, showing her clavicle!

right now, we MM fans currently find ourselves a little past the halfway mark of the third season. this sunday, amc will air the eighth installment of a (like the previous two) thirteen-episode season. the thirteen episodes will be played continually, unlike most series that will me stretched out from september to may, littered with re-runs in between. my brother and i have been watching every episode together, and, as hard as i try, i can’t really convince anyone else to jump on the 1960s advertising agency fan girl bandwagon. i wonder why every not.

new fan, old fan, or simply curious, check out Mad Men on AMC every sunday at 9:00 central time. you will not regret. or maybe you will.
