this brings me to what this post is really about. almost two weeks ago, my friend, her younger sister, and myself went to go see drew barrymore’s directorial debut film, Whip It, which i had been looking forward to for some time. i went to the film with an open mind, well aware of the fact that drew is an average actor, at best, and, therefore, her directing capabilities might me less than impressive. like i said, i was looking forward to this movie mainly because of the cast. i do like drew barrymore and juliette lewis; i’ve finally come to terms with the fact that ellen page is a good actress; kristin wiig is absolutely amazing, and andrew wilson (eldest of the always charming wilson brothers) is totally hilarious. the premise of the movie is simple: small town girl goes to the big city and sees a roller derby game and wants to do it herself but has to hide it from her mom because she just wants her daughter to be a beauty queen. roller derby itself is an awesome sport. the chicks who do it are badass, and it’s fun to see girls kicking each others asses. another really cool bonus is that the film is set in texas, and lots of the scenes are in austin, a very cool city. bottom line is that i love movies about strong gals, and the movie’s tag line is: Be your own hero. hell yeah!

there were two things that i feel i should definitely start doing that i got from the movie. i say only two because i’m already badass and my own hero (LIES). the first is simple: EYELINER. i’m guessing in the makeup for the actresses in the movie, many sticks of eyeliner were harmed! it’s excessive. but totally awesome. so yeah, i’m going to start using eyeliner more often than i usually do (i.e. never). look at the picture below! isn’t their make up great? look at kristen wiig’s! her eyeliner is like across her temples. well, i don’t want to do my make up daily like that, but i feel that i already have kinda big eyes that are pretty okay looking, so eyeliner would definitely accentuate them.

the other thing i want to start using that i got from the movie is a certain kind of shoe. skates? noooo. combat boots. throughout the film (when not in her derby uniform), ellen page’s character bliss was usually rocking a skirt/tights/combat boot combo. it was pretty hot. i definitely think that that combat boots and tights, when paired with feminine skirts or dresses, would be a very cool look. tomorrow, i’m going to the goodwill store to see if i might be able to find some. i’m really excited.

the movie was really great. i definitely recommend anyone to see it. it’s not a chick flick, but it definitely sends a message of female empowerment. it’s not radically feminist, though. if you’re a girl and you see this movie, you will definitely feel that you can rock a pair of skates and still be a badass. just because i liked the movie so much, i’m going to include some more stills.
